Technical Information
To ensure autorun and distribution:
Modifies the following registry keys:
- [<HKLM>\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] 'Userinit' = 'userinit.exe,services.exe'
- [<HKLM>\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{Y479C6D0-OTRW-U5GH-S1EE-E0AC10B4E666}] 'StubPath' = '%WINDIR%\Help\services.exe'
- [<HKLM>\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{F146C9B1-VMVQ-A9RC-NUFL-D0BA00B4E999}] 'StubPath' = '%WINDIR%\Help\svchost.exe'
Creates the following files on removable media:
- <Drive name for removable media>:\autorun.inf
- <Drive name for removable media>:\MarcMaynard.exe
Malicious functions:
To complicate detection of its presence in the operating system,
forces the system hide from view:
- hidden files
- file extensions
Creates and executes the following:
- %WINDIR%\Help\svchost.exe
Terminates or attempts to terminate
the following user processes:
- nod32.exe
- nod.exe
- zlclient.exe
- zapro.exe
- fsavgui.exe
- ashAvast.exe
- ash.exe
- avgcc.exe
- ashAvSrv.exe
Modifies settings of Windows Internet Explorer:
- [<HKCU>\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] 'Window Title' = '«?¤‡ M•a•R•C † m•A•y•N•a•R•? ‡¤?»'
Sets a new unauthorized home page for Windows Internet Explorer.
Modifies file system :
Creates the following files:
- C:\autorun.inf
- %HOMEPATH%\Desktop\hi.txt
- C:\MarcMaynard.exe
- %WINDIR%\Help\services.exe
- %WINDIR%\Help\svchost.exe
Sets the 'hidden' attribute to the following files:
- C:\autorun.inf
- <Drive name for removable media>:\MarcMaynard.exe
- <Drive name for removable media>:\autorun.inf
- C:\MarcMaynard.exe
- <Full path to virus>
- %WINDIR%\Help\services.exe
- %WINDIR%\Help\svchost.exe
